Microsoft SkyDrive has officially changed its name to Microsoft OneDrive, Ryan Gavin, the Microsoft GM for Consumer Apps and Services announced today. This change of branding comes as a court in Britain ruled in favour of British Sky Broadcast (BSkyB) when a name dispute between them and Microsoft arose some time last year. Microsoft not only felt it was unnecessary to continue with the court battle, it also felt that it was time to re-brand hence the new name.

Emphasis however is on the fact that no services will be disrupted for any SkyDrive customers as this is only a name change.

When asked why they chose the name OneDrive, Ryan said in a blogpost, “We know that increasingly you will have many devices in your life, but you really want only one place for your most important stuff. One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life.”

“For current users of either SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro, you’re all set. The service will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio.

Expect to be able to experience the new OneDrive soon, and if you want to be one of the first to hear about it, let us know at OneDrive.com.” Ryan added.
