Samsung CEO BK Yoon Calls For Collaboration In IoT Realization

SAMSUNG ON INTERNET OF THINGS

To unlock the infinite possibilities of the Internet of Things (IoT) and realise its potential to transform the society, economy and way of life , there is need for greater openness and collaboration across industries, this is according to Boo-Keun Yoon, Samsung Electronics’ President and CEO.

Yoon, who was speaking at the ongoing International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2015) in Las Vegas, said IoT needs to center on people and fit into their lifestyles if it is to positively improve the lives of people across nations.

“The Internet of Things is not about things. Instead, it is about people. Each person is at the center of their own technology universe, and the IoT universe will constantly adapt and change shape as people move through their world,” said Yoon.

Geared towards achieving an IoT space where lives of people are touched directly and the industry is revolutionized, Samsung believes the collaboration of industries will help build the necessary infrastructure and develop the many tailored IoT services that can meet the needs of consumers.

In this same light of working to realize the IoT era, the technology giant has laid out its road-map for the next few years that will help make Samsung Electronics IoT enabled, citing that 2015 will see the company invest more money in the developer community to encourage new IoT developments.

Banking on the fact that developers will play a key role in realizing the IoT era, Samsung announced that it would spend more that 100 Million Dollars in strengthening accelerator programs as well as international developer events.

Devices and components from the electronics giant are also set to feature the technology in the expansion towards IoT devices.

“By 2017, all Samsung televisions will be IoT devices and in five years all Samsung hardware will be IoT-ready, further accelerating the expansion of IoT devices across the market,” said Yoon.

Samsung sensors are set to become more advanced and precise as it develops a new three-dimensional range sensor that can detect the tiniest movements, in addition to the current sensors that understands a person’s environment and offers solutions on the same.

With the wearable tech space growing every day, Samsung is also working on chips that are energy efficient and compact enough to be used in the devices as well as on mobile, such as the embedded package-on-package (ePOP) and the Bio-Processor.

“Expanding the devices in the IoT ecosystem and the components that power them is the first step in fulfilling the promise of the Internet of Things,” said Mr. Yoon.

In regards to creating an open ecosystem for the success of IoT, Samsung emphasizes the need for devices from whatever platform to be able to connect and communicate with one another.

2015 will see all new Smart TVs from Samsung run on the company’s Tizen software for better home entertainment experience for the user.
