A new app is allowing iPhone users to open their Mac computers without having to type in their passwords, but instead use their TouchID devices to authenticate and unlock their computers more conveniently.

Dubbed FingerKey, the mobile app has been designed to use Bluetooth 4.0 to allow users to unlock their computers from a distance, serving the need for when one is in a hurry.

This means that a user of the app can unlock their computers when walking in the door instead of waiting until they get to their desks, and also one does not have to stop what they are doing to go key in their passwords for a guest user.

Taking advantage of the TouchID fingerprint sensor present on Apple devices that was opened by the company to be used by developers, FingerKey app is compatible with iOS 8.0 or later and has been optimized for the iPhone 5 devices.

According to FingerKey developer Leandro Luizari, the app offers capability to unlock multiple devices, a 256-bit AES encryption for security in connecting the iPhone with the Mac and a Notification Centre Widget to allow for fast access of the app.

FingerKey is developed to be used with Bluetooth-LE capable devices, and will need the FingerLock that is also compatible with Mac computers supporting Bluetooth-LE.

The app is expected to incorporate visual enhancements, compatibility with all screen sizes, Pattern unlock options like those used in Android devices as well as allow for compatibility with Windows and Linux based computers at a later date.

Users can get the FingerKey app, also compatible with iPads and iPod touch, at the AppStore for $1.99, while the FingerLock is available as a free download on the developer’s website.

Currently, however, the app has a problem working with latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, with users having to wait for an update.

The developer also adds that the app will also work on the iPhone 4S with Bluetooth-LE support, meaning the app may allow for devices without the TouchID capability.
