Samsung Electronics has announced the development of 60GHz Wi-Fi technology that will enable users to stream uncompressed high-definition videos from their mobile devices to TVs in real-time without delay.

The new 802.11ad standard 60GHz Wi-Fi technology will allow for data transmission at high speeds of up to 4.6Gps (575MB per second), which is five times the 866Mbps (108MB per second) speed that is possible with the current electronic devices.

When connected to this new technology the users will be able to transfer a 1GB movie item in less than three seconds between devices.

“Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimetre-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology” said Kim Chang Yong, the Head of DMC R&D Centre of Samsung Electronics in a statement.

The technology is designed to eliminate co-channel interference, despite the number of devices using the same network, in order to maintain the maximum speed.

Samsung also launched a micro beam-forming control technology that the company will use to help improve overall signal quality so as to make the Wi-Fi technology commercially available and free of weak penetration properties due to changes in the communications environment.

Samsung has plans to commercialize the 60GHz technology by early next year with further plans to use the technology on telecommunications equipment, audio visual products, medical devices, the Samsung Smart Home product as well as initiatives related to the Internet of Things (IoT) .

“New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology,” said Chang Yong.

Samsung Electronics East Africa was among the companies awarded at the Frost & Sullivan Best Practise awards ceremony for demonstrating innovation, competitiveness and leadership in its mobile division.
